>> Sterio Sound Recording

This workshop is aimed at new filmmakers/video makers who would like to learn the basic principals in recording stereo sound on location. It would be helpful to have had some prior experience in the basics of sound recording. Taking our one-day introduction to sound recording on location workshop can provide this.

Hands-on work on real location using practical techniques

This is an intense hands-on workshop where basic theory and demonstration will be used to underpin a series of three different location shoots providing varying environments and using a selection of stereo recording techniques.

Straight Curve learning objectives:

  • A recap of the nature of sound transmission and hearing (demonstration and theory): To understand the nature of sound will help us to understand how we hear. This helps us to understand how to locate sound in space.
  • Loud speakers and microphones (theory and location shoot): Understanding the function of speakers and microphones will help you to record stereo sound.
  • Stereo reproduction (theory, demonstration and location shoot): As opposed to live/real sounds we look at factors affecting reproduced image location. Microphone techniques. Time of arrival vs. level differences etc.
  • Technology of stereo reproduction (theory and demonstration): This includes use of metering for levels and phase, A-B stereo and M-S stereo, mono compatibility, etc.
  • Stereo sound with visual images (discussion and location shoot): This will cover the understanding of the geographic relationship between sound and visual images.
  • Synchronisation (discussion): This will include lip-synch, clapperboard, introduction to time code etc.
